Remote Access - VPN

  

Remote access extends the benefit of your network resources to mobile and home workers whilst allowing data to be consolidated at a central location.

Traditionally remote access has been achieved by connecting to a network using either ISDN or analogue telephone lines. The cost of call charges for this solution can be significant, particularly from international locations, and performance is limited to the connection speed.

A more effective and efficient solution is to connect to the corporate network across the Internet through a VPN. VPN utilises sophisticated encryption and encapsulation technology to allow data to be securely transmitted across the Internet. Remote workers and branch offices can establish network connections from any location using their local Internet connection. This solution can be used with standard dial-up access but is particularly effective where unmetered high speed broadband Internet connections are used.

VPN forms an integral feature of many firewall systems. Academy can provide a range of IPSec and PPTP VPN solutions including the Watchguard Firebox X systems.

Forming the core of most commercial networks, the performance and reliability of the servers is fundamental in providing an efficient solution.

When evaluating existing systems and proposing new hardware we endeavor to specify failover protection where possible by utilising RAID disks systems and redundant power supplies. Academy have found that deploying well specified servers at the outset offers significant benefits as the cost of upgrading older equipment tends to be relatively expensive.

From experience we recommend using the Microsoft Windows 2000 and NT4 server operating systems as they offers a reliable, mature, well supported platforms that are compatible most proprietary applications. Windows 2000, the successor to NT4, incorporates Active Directory which streamlines the management of user and computers and comes as standard with Terminal Services for remote administration.
